Meet the Most Conservative and Liberal Congressional Representatives in US History

Conservative: H. R. Gross

Called "The Useful Pest" by Time Magazine, this guy is known for his staunch fiscal conservatism. He is known reciting the poem The Victory Ball while The White House held an extravagant ball during the height of the Vietnam War.

Gross has been lauded by libertarians as being the congressman with the most libertarian voting record.

Liberal: Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.

Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was a civil rights activist and the 4th African American to be elected to Congress after Reconstruction. He would often dine in "whites only" diners with fellow black constituents.

Powell was a Baptist minister known for his remark "Keep the Faith, Baby" to his constituents during a Congressional investigation that ultimately stripped him of his seat due to exorbitant trips, misappropriation of funds, absenteeism and other malfeasance. Though he was barred from his seat, his district (including Harlem) continued to vote him into office until 1970.
